We'd recommend that anyone travelling by train in India buys a copy of this. It's basically a timetable and gives you the train numbers that are required for booking seats.
The Indian train system is vast and employs many thousands of people. Travelling by train is fairly cheap and pretty good, even on overnight journeys. We favour the '3AC' class, three-tier bunks in air conditioned carriages. We could go cheaper, but could also go much more expensive.

train to benaras
Chalo (lets go to ) Benaras.....On the eve of kartik purnima and also dev depavali (click here lacs of people wanted to get there to take a dip.
Here’s a scenario from a small town station a little away from benaras where the frenzied crowd wanted to get on to the passenger train to reach there. Our train had also stopped here and people were actually coming across from below the stationary train to get on to this one...not visible in this shot.
