Surat is the fastest growing mega-city in India (present population about 55 lacs and growing @ 2 lacs per annum) and its Rly stn is very small and lacking in facilities, so its mega redevelopment project costing Rs 5000 crore must be carried out at the earliest. A few options are :
(1) To go for 6-8 towers of 33 storeys instead of 3 towers of 66 storeys to compensate for the loss of developed area
(2) To consider a new airport of adequate capacity and at a better location with possibility

of having an international terminal, keeping in view its diamond export industry/business.
(3) To have new ST station at a suitable location, just a few kms away from existing ST station, so that it is out of the funnel area of ST airport.

The new station option will not be easy. Inside the city, there's not much space to make a new station. If a new station is proposed, the best option would be to re-develop either one of Udhna, Sachin or Kosad, or perhaps make a new station towards Hazira, 25 minutes to the west of the Surat Railway Station. Re-developing Surat Station and increasing the no of platforms, looks like the possible option, although it may be the toughest thing to do.
