Plan to replace conventional railway coaches with LHB ones on slow track
Sunday, 4 May 2014 - 8:47pm IST | Place: New Delhi | Agency: PTI
Railways' plan to replace conventional coaches with LHB coaches for their enhanced capacity to absorb derailment impact is on slow track despite the urgent need for it.
...
Coaches of the ill-fated Diwa-Sawantwadi passenger train, derailed between Nagothane and Roha railway stations, about 120 kms from Mumbai today, killing 17 passengers, were conventional coaches, which are prone to capsize in case of derailment.
The LHB coaches, equipped with advanced couplers and anti-climbing features, prevent capsizing of coaches in case of accident. This helps to minimise damage and reduce the loss of lives because the LHB bogies do not get toppled due to its modern design. While two coaches derailed, two coaches were capsized after the derailment of the passenger train today and maximum casualty occured in capsized caoches, said a senior Railway Ministry official.
However, the official said railways is planning to switch over from indigenous coaches to German technology-based Linke Holfmann Bush (LHB) ones in all trains in phases only. Currently, railways manufacture about 600 LHB coaches in Rail Coach factory in Kapurthala and Rae Bareli per year while about 3,000 conventional coaches are being produce at Integrated Coach Factory in Chennai. LHB coaches, made of stainless steel, have more in-built safety features and can absorb shock and impact of derailment more effectively.
According to the official, there is also a need to equip drivers and guards with battery operated cutting tools to speed up evacuation of passengers from capsized coaches. Battery-operated cutting tools can be made available to driver and guard for cutting windows of capsized coaches for evacuating trapped passengers before the arrival of accident relief train (ART). "One has to wait for the accident relief train to reach the site before starting the evacuation process. The battery operated cutting tools can be used in emergency to cut windows of the capsized coaches to extricate passengers in emergency instead of waiting for the ART," the official said.

From HWH/KOAA to ADI presently 7 active trains are there in IR.
But all the trains taking so much time(More than 34 hours in all case) and having so many halts except Garbha Exp.
Can it be possible to introduce such a train which can cover this 2088 km(From HWH to ADI) within 28 to 30 HRS???
Presently too many trains are

but none of those are faster taking so much time to reach ADI directly from HWH.
Even SF take more than 37 hours. I wonder is it a SF or a "Bailgadi"???

Faster trains needed in HWH ADI Route.
IF HWH Pune Drnt can cover 2023 km(HWH to Pune) in 27 hrs 25 mins then it is also possible to cover 2088km(HWH to ADI) in 29 hrs with imp halts only.

*********A very Interesting Info for the Diesel Lovers**********
******* DO YOU KNOW THE ORIGINALITY OF WDM 3D"??????******
Please have a look at the following:
The "Original Name" of WDM 3D is ALCO DL560C which is the newest variant based on the DL560C power pack and is complete with micro-processor controls, better ergonomics, etc.
The
...
ALCO DL560C locomotive was designed by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) for operation in India.
In the early 1960s Indian Railways needed a reliable diesel workhorse to gradually replace its steam locomotive fleet. Equal numbers (40 each) of ALCO's DL560C and EMD's SD24 were chosen for trials. More locomotives of each of these were purchased for more trials. Indian Railways was keen on producing these locomotives in the country rather than depending on imports. EMD did not agree for a Transfer-of-Technology, while ALCO did. Thus ALCO DL560C was chosen for the job due to its easy maintenance, reliability and simple operation.
The locomotive was classified as WDM-2 series and was assigned to haul long/short distance passenger trains and freight. These units are still in service. When the production of WDM2 ceased, there were 2706 locomotives in the system. The production began in the late 1960s, and went on till the late 1990s.
After importing a couple of batches of this locomotive, Indian Railways started manufacturing them in India itself and also introduced modified variants of the same locomotive. Some were fitted with a less-powerful engine, classified as WDS series, and were meant for shunting duties in marshalling yards across the country. Various variants, all based on the ALCO DL560C power-pack were developed. The original powerpack churned out 2600hp worth of power, while after modifications, Engineers at DLW managed to extract as high as 3300 hp of power.

Future Venture of Integral Coach Factory in conformity with the "Mandate" of Railway Board to ensure more safety to the onboard commuters of long distance trains by switching over to 100% stainless steel coaches:

A news about Linke Hoffman Busch(LHB) Coach is published in the esteemed english daily "The Times of India" on OCT 14,2014 at 06.42Pm IST which is described below.

Title: Integral Coach Factory (Perambur,Chennai) to manufacture 975 LHB coaches in three years
Reporter:V Ayyappan, TNN
Date:Oct 14, 2014, 06.42PM IST(Tuesday)
CHENNAI: The Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai is planning to step up production of LHB ( Linke Hofmann Busch) coaches, which are safer and faster.
The factory, which manufactures coaches for Indian Railways, will make 75 LHB coaches this year, 300 next year and 600 coaches the year after. LHB coaches are made of stainless steel.
"We are planning to switch to stainless steel coaches completely in five years. These coaches are better suited as there is a corrosion problem in coastal areas. LHB coaches have a life of 35 years and are equipped for speeds up to 160kmph and can be upgraded to run at 200kmph and are ideal for high speed trains," said ICF general manager Ashok K Agarwal at a press conference here on Tuesday.
The move comes after the railway board decided to phase out the ICF-designed integral coaches and switch to LHB coaches. LHB coaches are safe as they won't pile up over other coaches during an accident. Travel comfort is also high when compared to the conventional coaches.
"The cost of production of LHB coaches is more in comparison with the conventional coaches. A conventional coach costs Rs 80 lakh to Rs 1.5 crore and LHB coach costs Rs 1.6 crore to Rs 2 crore."
He said of the 1,622 coaches that were made last year, 386 were given to Southern Railway by Railway Board. "This year 152 coaches were given to the zone till September," he added.
ICF is performing well in the 2014-15 production year. The half yearly production from April to September was the highest ever for each month in comparison with that in previous year. The cumulative outturn of 824 coaches during the first half of this year is the highest ever for the period and is 24.5% more than the production in the corresponding period last year.
The factory, founded in 1955, is celebrating the diamond jubilee year this year. The ICF had produced 48,708 coaches till September 2014 and will cross the 50,000th mark in the diamond jubilee year.
"A series of programmes are planned for the diamond jubilee year celebrations. These include an ICF Diamond Jubilee Exhibition Express, which will travel to all zonal headquarters and production units, a special postal stamp and cover, a mass tree plantation drive, sports and cultural competitions, medical camps for employees, a diamond jubilee scholarship fund and improvement of facilities for residential units," he added.

This is surely a "Good Move" taken by the Rail Board as the security of the passengers is concerned and a positive indication of starting a "New Era of LHBs" in Indian Railways regarding Coaches of Mail & Exp.

Very Crucial Info.
The salient points of the news report are as follows:
Passenger security will be more than ICF coaches and accidents and casualties can be avoided to a large extent if LHBs are used.
As already discussed LHBs have many advantages and now the cost of LHBs has been equivalent to ICF as per the News Report.
Cost
...
of ICF: 1.5 Cr
Cost of LHB: 1.6 cr to 2 Cr which was previously 2.5 Cr for AC/Non Ac Coach and 3.5 Cr for an EOG.
As Indian Engineers have mastered the technology and knowhow of Producing LHBs now so the cost has been curtailed so that more LHB Coaches can be provided to IR in future.
