Construction of the Gwalior Light Railway commenced in 1893, an initiative of Maharaja Madhavro Scindia. Scindia State Railways eventually the railway consisted of 474km of 2’ gauge lines, serving hundreds of villages. The last of these narrow gauge lines was closed in 2020, to be replaced by broad gauge.
